The Eensy Weensy Spider Freaks Out (Big Time)

Two years ago while I was on sabbatical I had the great good fortune of working with the incredibly talented and ultra super nice Troy Cummings. Troy colored the cover of Optical Allusions and his vision for the colors turned the cover into an eye-popping, eye-catching piece of eye-candy (eye book, eye puns, get it?). Anywho, Troy is a magnificent illustrator and his new book The Eensy Weensy Spider Freaks Out (Big Time) is now available in fine bookstore near you or online. This one has it all: an arthropod star (sweet), a fun twist on a familiar on song and pictures that make you go homina homina homina. You really should buy it and if that doesn’t convince you, here is a Youtube trailer. Plus, he has small kids to feed, so y’know, think of the children!

Fantastic trailer, and you are right, the colors are awesome. Is my 5 year old too old for this book? Can I use her as an excuse to buy it?

Hey, Mason! I’m planning on getting a copy for my son Jack’s birthday. He’s going to be 8 but we read everything from picture books to the latest Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson, The Red Pyramid).

Ok I just did a little experiment. I realized I hadn’t shown the boys the teaser yet. Since they both know that Troy colored my cover so I showed it to them under the pretense of “hey, this is the guy that colored the cover of Optical Allusions.” They watched it four times giggling and wondering what the spider was doing on a rocket. The googly eyes when she freaks out was also a hit. When they were done, Jack turned to me and said “Can we get it?” You betcha, son!

Also, please notice that the eensey weensey spider has argyle markings on her opistosoma. It just gets better and better…

I’m sold. I’ll let you know what my daughter thinks.

And I think I need to learn what an opistosoma is.
